Why your Online Brand Reputation is Vital for Making Money Online

If you are selling something online, whether it is a product or service, one of the most important things to do is to create an online brand. This has many advantages, as we will soon see. Let’s take a closer look at what is involved in the issue of creating an online brand and seeing that its reputation drives customers to your online shop or website.

• What is an Online Brand?

First of all, what is an online brand? Essentially what this term means is an online business identity that people can easily identify, remember, and respond to. Just like ordinary brands on products people buy all the time, a brand has a name, often a logo of some sort, and sometimes a motto or catch phrase. Creating an online brand essentially involves coming up with these items and then associating them with the online presence you have and the products or services you are selling.

• Brands Have Identities

Essentially an online brand is the identity of a product or service that is offered online. It takes the product or service from its generic status and turns it into a recognizable and identifiable thing. In a sense it gives what is being sold a “personality.” The brief content involved in the brand identity – the name, logo, and so on- serve to personalize the product and make it easy to remember and relate to.

• Identities Have Reputations

Just as people have reputations, brands take on reputations as they become known to more and more people. The creation of a brand allows people to easily identify others who have used that brand. So word begins to get around. This happens more slowly if an online provider is somewhat anonymous. With a brand it tends to happen as a matter of course. People share their like or dislike for a brand and this begins to create an overall impression in the mind of the buying public concerning the brand and its worth. They do this by all sorts of online means like leaving comments on review sites, blogs, and forums, and also by ordinary means like simple in person verbal communication.

• Reputations can Make or Break a Sale

This is why establishing the reputation of a brand is so important. If people begin to associate a brand with attributes like quality, reasonable prices, trustworthiness, and good customer service, this can really skyrocket site traffic and sales. So these two processes work together: creating the brand makes an identity and identification of a product or service easier and more convenient in the public mind. Thereafter, the reputation drives the traffic and demand for what a seller is selling.

• How to Establish a Good Online Brand Reputation

This part of the process is fairly self explanatory. Creating a good reputation means all the things doing good business has always meant: producing quality products or services, standing by them by offering good warranties and guarantees, providing good communication and help to customers with outstanding customer service, and so on. When the brand becomes associated with these very real qualities, business tends to drive itself.

In summary, then, creating an online brand allows an online business to easily establish a reputation. It sets up a convenient identity for people to associate reports of quality or lack thereof to. A good reputation when combined with good branding can be a very powerful combination that can lead to big profits.

  1. Hey Carla, great tips as usual. I am a huge fan of being the brand! It was hard for me to switch to a cartoon avatar but this past month has been pretty good and since it looks like me it doesn’t hurt too much. I just feared that I would no longer be the brand and no one would make the connection. I recently went to Blogher and I wore my HUGE fro and everyone who had seen my site knew it was me so it worked. Branding is always amazing advice! Thank you!

    • Thanks Tamona! Building a brand is sort of one of my weak areas and something that I’m continuing to work on. Your cartoon character looks just like you. Did you develop your own avatar? I love it :)

      • Oh no I wish I was that talented. My designer is an extremely talented artist named Jean. He has a FB page under JNess and he does a lot of freelance work. He is so amazing and so affordable. I am so super cheap its ridiculous. I would happily pay him to do more for me. You should go to his FB page JNESS Art and ck out some portraits he did for other people. He is sooooo fabulous!
