Why Should You Start an Online Home Business?

Guest Post By: Alban

You’ll hear a different  success story every day about a young entrepreneur who made millions through their online home business. So while young people are often stereotyped as lazy, irresponsible and unmotivated, there are plenty of teens and young adults who prove the bitter older generations wrong and you could be among them if you have an idea and a passion for online business.

Before you decide to jump into an online career, consider whether the benefits of starting an online home business can benefit you. For example, if you are currently studying and wondering how you’re going to translate your degree into a career, then you may want to consider working for yourself in an online business. Not only will you be able to map out your own career path in your own business, you can start right now – you don’t have to wait until you’ve finished your course to hire yourself, you’re qualified right now.

The sooner you start looking at developing an online business, the more time and opportunity you will have to help it develop and grow. Therefore, don’t quit studying as you develop your online business because once it gets going you’ll be able to leave your starving student days behind you. You won’t have to rush off to wait tables at a restaurant every night, and you won’t have to scan item after item every weekend as a supermarket checkout operator. Instead you can be earning a much healthier salary working for yourself in your online business, plus since you can do it from wherever you plug in your computer, you’ll actually have more time to spend on your studies, and on your social life too of course.

If you are willing to put in a few hard months to set up an online home business, after that the time required to maintain a passive income from your business decreases dramatically. Therefore, you could even start an online business if you’re still at school, and avoid the stress of choosing a course you can afford or applying for scholarships. Since you are of the generation who has been using computers since before they could walk, setting up an online business after school will only require you to build a webpage and manage emails and other online communications – tasks you could do in your sleep.

You’ll also be spending your time productively, building an income and a business for yourself, plus since you are probably still living at home and have few bills and expenses of your own, you don’t need to clear a lot of money in the beginning to make a profit. Then, as you become more experienced, you develop your education and you can devote more time to the platform of an online business you have created, you’ll be perfectly poised to take on big businesses.

Many of the jobs you have through high school or university are only teaching you the skills you need for that role – while being able to flip a burger may help you in your own kitchen one day, it is hardly a life lesson. However, when you decide to build your own online business and plan, research and manage that business towards success, then you are developing skills which will last you a lifetime.

The theory of education will be important as you grow your career, but the value of real experience will show your employer or your clients that you truly are up for any task they can throw at you. When you work to grow your online business you will develop strong online marketing and advertising skills which will help you develop your business further if you decide to pursue it after your studies, and will certainly make you a valuable asset to any business looking for a competitive edge in the market place, and a unique branding image.

You’ll also learn the value and skills of networking and with a strong professional network you will not only be able to access a wealth of valuable information to help you grow your business, but you’ll also have a foot in the door to some of the biggest and most powerful companies should you start a job search. With a shift to online and electronic communication, the art of writing is often lost, but if you make sure to maintain your writing skills through articles, web pages, websites or written advertisements then you will learn how to write for your audience, engage your visitors and turn them into clients.

You may also want to consider starting an online business if you’re not sure what you want to do after you finish studying. Many people take a gap year and travel, but what if you spent your gap year working the hours you want, working from home and earning money instead of spending it to set you up for financial freedom. You’ll also experience a range of different career options working in your online business so that your ‘gap’ year really does help you find what you want to do with your life.

If you are considering starting an online home business, you will want to make sure you do everything you can to make it a success. Unfortunately, when you are young and starting out in business, you have a few more hurdles to clear than everyone else, so make you know how you will tackle:

* Your financing. As a young person wanting to start a business online you are not going to evoke a lot of confidence in your investors. Plus, you won’t have had the same opportunities as your older counterparts to save up your own funds. Plus, if you are under 18 years old you won’t be able to apply for traditional forms of credit such as a business loan or a credit card. Instead, approach your local business association and find out about assistant packages for young business people.

* Your experience. While you may be enthusiastic, and you will come away from the running your own business with a wealth of experience there are a lot of things you won’t know at the outset. This can also make it hard for your ideas to be taken seriously so make sure you are confident in your ideas and planning.

* Business location. While running your online business from home means low overheads and an easy work environment – no commute – make sure that it is conducive to your online business. For example while you may be based online, do you ever have a need to meet clients? Is your home a suitable meeting place>

While it can be a struggle to be taken seriously as a young person wanting to start their own online business, few people – regardless of age – can argue with preparation and planning. Therefore, as you prepare to start an online business, include the following steps in your planning:

1. Create a business profile. Clarify your ideas by writing a profile of yourself and your business, covering your skills, work experience and what your business will offer than no other business does.

2. Have a marketing strategy. The internet is a competitive place so make sure you do some market research to identify who will buy your product or service, and to check out what your competitors are doing. This will provide proof that you have found a niche in the market by researching what your competitors are and aren’t doing and you have developed a product or service which is exactly what your customers want. This also includes deciding how you will price, market and sell your product.

3. Have a financial plan. Make sure you detail realistic figures when considering your financial forecasts. You need to show that your business can generate enough income to cover expenses and turn a profit.

4. Think about an exit strategy. As you start your business it may not seem like the time to consider leaving your business, however, with an exit strategy in place you can set a time line for your business aims and how and when you want to achieve them. Plus, having a plan in case you choose to sell your business can ensure that everything is in place to make for a valuable sale if and when the time comes.
