3 Degrees That Will Help You Start a Stay-at-Home Career

There are tons of ways to make money using the internet, but very few ways to actually make a successful career out of it. Since you want to stay at home, whether you are a stay-at-home mom, have a disability, or some other responsibility that ties you to the house, then you have probably felt frustrated trying to find a way to generate an income. You may also feel unfulfilled doing odd jobs on the internet that almost anyone is qualified to do.

Just because you work from home, doesn’t mean you can’t have a real career! If you have the right skills, you can find a myriad of not just ‘busy work’, but useful jobs, to do from home. As with most careers, you are most likely going to need some schooling to develop the skills required. And what better way to get the skills for a stay-at-home job, than by getting a stay-at-home degree from an online college or university?

Online schools are ideal for the stay-at-home crowd because, just like a job, you can do everything from the comfort of your own home and on your own schedule. Now, let’s discuss what degrees will come in most handy when you are ready to transition from being a stay-at-home student to starting your career.

Web/Graphic Design- This is by far the highest-paying career of the three that are listed here. Plus, graphic and web design are skills that are in extremely high demand right now. There are tons of websites set up for design freelancers. Not only is this a great way to make money, but since there are few people with the necessary skill set. Therefore, competition is not so intense for these jobs, as with other online money-making methods. And what’s even greater about Web and Graphic design is that there are tons of online schools that offer certifications, associate’s degrees, and even bachelor’s degrees in the field. You can go as far as you want with your education. The higher the education level, the higher the pay.

Proofreading/Editing/Writing – Thankfully there are still many companies out there that care about the quality of their written work. Many professionals mistakenly assume that they have “grammar” under control, they are usually surprised to find their work full of red marks when it’s looked at by a true editor. With a degree in Editing or Writing, you will be trained in the skills necessary to not only write high-quality work, but to edit and streamline the work of others. There are many businesses out there who are willing to pay for these services since good writing and grammar reflects very well on any company!

Marketing – Where would we be without marketing? There is hardly a website that isn’t crowded with advertisements. Not to mention the fierce competition that goes on among different websites to earn the coveted #1 spot on Google rankings. With an online marketing degree, associate’s or bachelor’s, you will be able to help with things like search engine optimization, link building, and social networking. If you have a degree in marketing, you are sure to find work with any business who is striving to leave their online footprint.

These three degrees are some of the most readily-available online degrees, as well as great ways to make an actual career while living your stay-at-home lifestyle. Just because you stay at home, it doesn’t mean you can’t do work that makes you feel confident and proud. It is very possible to have a career from the comfort of your own home!

  2. Nicole these are a few great options and degrees to look into if investigating work from home. Many ICs state their degrees are not currently being utilized in their work from home career. That certainly would not be the case with these three.

  3. Very informative … I can see how these would all be degrees that would be beneficial for a person who wants to work out of his or her home. Particularly with the writing. You can get writing jobs with no degree or experience at all, but having a degree would certainly make it more likely for you to land a higher-paying writing gig.
